Ashley-John Long is emerging as one of the most unique and virtuosic double bassists in the U.K working in diverse range of idioms and with a passionate commitment to new music. He graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with 1st Class Honours and the Simon Clarkson Memorial award for best Musician where he studied double bass with Dominic Seldis and William Graham-White.
A specialist in contemporary repertoire, Ashley has performed as a soloist throughout the U.K, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic giving the premiers of numerous new works for solo bass, and toured in 2008 with French double bassist Louis-Michel Marion in an acclaimed series of recitals featuring music by Xenakis, Bussotti, Scelsi and Barry Guy. Over 20 composers have written new works for him and he has developed a unique approach to the instrument, created innovative new performance techniques including methods of preparing the bass, and had performances broadcast on television and radio stations throughout the U.K and Europe including the BBC, Radio France and Radio Oort Austria.
He has performed with many of the U.K and Europe’s finest orchestra’s and guests as principal double bassist with such ensembles as the Chamber Ensemble of Europe, National Chamber Orchestra of Wales, Cardiff New Music Collective, the Millennium Ensemble and the RWCMD Baroque Orchestra, as well as playing a great deal of chamber music and co-founding the Wreckhead ensemble in 2008 with the composer Adam Bell.
Active as a composer. recent commissions have included; the critically acclaimed Flux (2006) for the Lunar Saxophone Quartet, Songs of the Night (2007) for Joel Garthwaite, Frames (2008) for percussion soloist Dave Danford and XAS (2008) for himself and Louis-Michel Marion, which have been praised for their original and inventive writing. His works are published by Stanch Music and Alto Publications.
