Book signing with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac will sign the complete re-edition of “Le Grand Armorial équestre de la Toison d’or” published by BnF, Éditions de la Bibliothèque nationale de France and Editions du Seuil, on Wednesday, November 22nd at the Galleria Carla Sozzani Bookshop at 6.30 pm. “The Grand Armorial équestre de la Toison d’or” is one of the most outstanding illuminated manuscripts of the late Middle-Ages. Painted with gouache on paper, in Lille, between 1436 and 1437, it shows the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded by the Duke of Burgundy, Philippe le Bon, in 1430. It also shows important figures of the time, kings, dukes, counts and princes of the Church in full dress. The clothes, at the same time civilian and military, are absolutely magnificent. Published by the Editions de la BnF with the Editions du Seuil, this book is a reprint, exactly as it was, of a medieval manuscript showing the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Painted with gouache on paper in the 15th century, this document has been carefully preserved by the BnF since the 18th century. This exceptional manuscript is enriched by a presentation by the historian Michel Pastoureau, specialist of the coat of arms, the colors and the medieval bestiary, and a crossed interview between the medievalist and the artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, iconoclastic creator passionate about history and contemporary art, as well as many unpublished drawings of his hand. Michel Pastoureau is an art historian, specialist of the symbolism of colours and emblems. Historian, specialist of the symbolism of colours, emblems and heraldry, Michel Pastoureau is emeritus director of studies at the École pratique des hautes études where he held the chair of history in the field of western symbolism during 35 years and published numerous books such as L’art héraldique au Moyen Âge, Bestiaires du Moyen Âge and Les Couleurs expliquées en images. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, fashion designer, is fond of heraldic art. He illustrated this book with numerous and never-published before drawings. Known as iconoclastic creator who has never imagined any border between art, fashion, design or music. His protean universe is made of atypical meetings and unexpected collaborations that gave birth to a sprawling and transgenerational work.
